A Physicist /IT scientist position open to join international research teams

The GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung in Darmstadt (GSI), based in Darmstadt (Germany), a partner of ESCAPE, is looking for 1 physicist/IT scientist to join the ESCAPE international consortium. You can apply for the vacancy focused on supporting and improving GSI tools for continuous integration (Jenkins based), automated testing and release management, while being reponsible for operations and further developments of the extensive IT infrastructure of GSI and FAIR.

Bringing together astronomy, astroparticle & particle physics into a single European collaborative cluster

ESCAPE answers the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) ambition in bringing People, Data, Services, Training, Publications, Projects & Organisations, all together in an integrated and federated environment. It is the first time that many of the greatest European scientific facilities in physics and astronomy have combined forces to make their data and software interoperable and open, committing to make the European Science Cloud a reality.

Working in Antiproton and Ion Research field at GSI

The GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung in Darmstadt operates a worldwide leading accelerator facility for research purposes. At GSI, FAIR is currently being built, an international accelerator facility for the research with antiprotons and ions which is being developed and constructed in cooperation with international partners. It is one of the world’s largest construction projects for international cutting-edge research. The FAIR project was initiated by the scientific community and researchers of GSI. The GSI accelerators will become part of the future FAIR facility and serve as the first acceleration stage.

Beyond the shareholders, about 3,000 scientists from about 50 countries take part in the development of the experiments and the scientific program of FAIR. They will come to FAIR and GSI in Darmstadt as visiting scientists in the future to use the facility for research.

Do I have the necessary profile?

  • Bachelor, Master, Diploma of Computer Science, Physics, or comparable course of studies;
  • Experience building with build environments, preferably C++ (preferred);
  • Experience using git, github or similar systems;
  • Experience with Agile development environments required;
  • Experience with Python or similar scripting languages;
  • Good communication (written & verbal) and interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to work independently, adaptability to work with bigger large teams in a global environment;
  • You work with love for detail and have good communication skills, high methodic and social competences and the willingness to learn additional skills.

What are the conditions?

  • Type of contract: position is initially limited to a duration of 3 years;
  • Salary: equivalent to that for public employees as specified in the collective agreement for public employees (TVöD Bund);
